Public Relations department disseminates the public policy and information about railways to people in general and mass media is particular. Various activities are under taken by PR department to reach the public. These include press releases, press conferences, books, banners, posters, photos, advertisements, Audio Visual publicity, Cinema slides, Heritage gallery, sms campaigns, websites etc.
Indian Railways have a defined Public Relations set up at Railway Board level as well as Zonal level.
Functions of PR Dept
1.Dissemination of timely and accurate information about Railways to public
2.Preparation & issue of Press Releases, News features & Special articles to various newspapers regarding regular activities and achievements of Western Railway in various fields.
3.Release of information on social awareness issues through advertisements, radio jingles, etc
4.Event Management Holding various functions, celebration events, etc.
5.Exhibition : Holding Exhibitions showcasing the railways on different occasions.

8.Publications : PR department also undertakes conceptualization, designing printing of various publications such as In-house magazines, Brochures, Books etc.
9.Release of Tender Advts received from various departments to DAVP approved publications as per Railway Board’s directives.

Duties & Responsibilities
CPRO is the Media Manager of Western Railway and over all in charge of Public Relations Department.
He mainly ensures the work of release of tender advts to various DAVP approved dailies as per Railway Board’s policy. He also ensures various arrangements & procedure to organise exhibitions & publication of ‘Rail Darpan’ inhouse magazine of W.Rly. as Sr. Executive Editor. He also ensures publicity of W.Rly.
He Liaisons with Press & Electronic Media & News Agencies. He prepares & issues Press Releases, News Features and other background material for various projects, events, functions etc. He arranges dissemination of timely & accurate rail related and passenger friendly information to public through various media. He gets prepared and releases information on social awareness issues as well as public utility information such as new trains, special trains etc through display advertisements
He is controlling the administration of Public Relations Office staff including Photography Section.He is in-charge of Web Sites of the Railway.He is the Nodal Officer of the Publicity Department for the smooth functioning of the newly created "Public Information Cell" at the headquarter level of Western Railway under the "Right to Information Act, 2005". He handles the alternative media to create awareness on social and rail related issues through radio spots, quickies, sms campaigns etc. In charge of event management for VIP events, functions and programmes. He is also involved in Heritage archiving & preservation along with designing & printing of books, brochures, posters, stickers, banners etc.
